Schools – Marine Education Programme

If you goal is long term development in environmental awareness and behaviour change, younger generations are the group that need to be targeted. With this in mind, Wicked Diving currently provides a year-long, 3 module project with local tourism school, SMKN1, focusing entirely on the oceans.

Module 1 focuses on Marine Education. Students complete a bespoke, weekly programme centering on the marine ecosystem, key Komodo marine species, threats and conservation of the whole environment. We invite guest speakers to lecture the students on life in the diving industry and to provide advice to those who would like to pursue this career path. Not only that, the students also participate in some serious beach cleans!

This programme has demonstrated itself to be an effective learning tool and the students are not only exhibiting a greater level of knowledge about marine issues, but also a passion and a desire to work to protect their country and its environment.

Wicked Diving has devised this programme to encourage pride in their country and to foster the wish to conserve it.  But it doesn’t stop there. We also want help these students to realise their dreams of becoming snorkel and dive guides. Module 2 of the programme looks at in-water skills development and swim coaching. Then, for the most motivated and hungry, Module 3 will provide dive training to set them on their way to becoming the next dive guides of Labaun Bajo.

SMKN 1 Labuan Bajo is a tourism school funded in part by the Indonesian government, for students between 15 and 18 years of age. It operates as a vocational facility, aiming to give students a well rounded education and future in the tourism industry. The programme consists of 5 modules – Travel, Hotel, Food and Beverage, Computer 1 (software application) and Computer 2 (hardware).
