This might seem just a small problem, but did you know that on average 5000 tons of sunscreen enters our world waters every year. Most common sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, these can be toxic in miniscule concentrations of about 62 parts per trillion. Our Dream
Our dream, is to start producing our own soaps and sunscreens. Just imagine if we could help the ocean we dearly love, and create an opportunity for the local community at the same time. I imagine a group of women (we like women empowerment at Wicked Diving) owning their own enterprise that produces reef safe sunscreen, soaps, conditioners and maybe even toothbrushes. Two birds, one stone… Wicked Good to the max. And this way we can eliminate the transport emissions we would get from import.
The Wicked Diving Philosophy
Stepping over to using reef safe soaps and sunscreens fits our company philosophy. Wicked Diving is ethical diving, from a human point of view, but also from an environment point of view.
Wicked Diving in 2018
In the last year we have made many steps:
- We have managed to reduce our plastic usage, by communicating with our suppliers, and providing reusable solutions.
- Wicked Diving has been one of the instigators to set up and organize a recycling station in Labuan Bajo Flores.
- Our daily products on the Liveaboard, is all local produce
- We have had the honor to be awarded by WWF with three Starfish, in their rating for sustainable Tourism.
- And now, today, December 14th 2018 we pledge to be the first Liveaboard company in Asia to go 100% Reef Safe.
