Wicked Diving is a proud sponsor of The GHRE Youth Outreach School for Burmese Children. As a sponsor, we have provided uniforms for the 22 kids that attend this school, in addition to these uniforms we will be visiting with these kids on a regualr basis to teach them about the fish and marine life in the area that they live in!
This week we went to visit the school and introduce these very special kids to each of our “fish”. Robyn, Filip, Tuk, Sara, Manuela, and Poy loaded up the Wicked Truck with art supplies, maps, fish books and lots of pictures and information about the marine life in the area, to take to the school and share our knowledge and experience with these kids. We were welcomed with big smiles and lots of questions. The topics we covered this week were:
Tuk and his lionfish, Robyn and the turtles, Filip and the Manta Rays, Sara and her clown fish (everyone loves nemo!), and Poy introduced everyone to the sharks! It was great fun, and by the end of our 2 hours, all the kids were making perfect “fish signs”, and asking lots of questions about what these fish eat, where they live, and how they sleep!
We are heading back next week for a one hour art lesson from one of our Wicked DMT’s to help the kids prepare for a special art project on THEIR favorite fish! Stay tuned for more stories and pictures!
The kids at the school have been working on a blog of their own.. here is their first entry:
“The Youth Outreach Program would like to introduce ourselves to the world, our kind supporters, and our many friends and family all around the world. The blog started as a project in storytelling and serves as a way to share our stories as well as hear stories about other students from all over the world. We will begin with an introduction we created in our storytelling class.
Our school name is Youth Outreach. Many people worked very hard to create our school. The school is very important for us. Our school opened 2 months ago. We have 22 students. We have a lot of goals. Before we came here we were studying at the Grassroots Learning Centers. Our school is in Khuk Khak in Southern Thailand. School is very important to us. We have many goals, aims, and ambitions. We want to achieve our goals. We want to be wise and good people. We go to school to learn many lessons.
In school we study Thai, English and Burmese languages. We also study about their cultures, geography, and history. We eat Burmese food for lunch every day. We also go to special community events. Recently, we went to Ban Nam Kem for World AIDS Day and walked to show our support. We also did a special dance for the observance.
In our freetime we like to listen to music, especially hip hop from Myanmar. We sing and dance too. On television we like cartoons like Spiderman and we watch many movies. Many of us play on the Grassroots football and volleyball teams. We like to read romantic stories and ghost stories. We help our parents with chore like washing our clothes and plates. We like to go shopping at the 7-11 and in the markets. We visit the beach and our friends’ houses. We especially like to watch the news to learn about issues in Myanmar. When Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar we watched the news to find out about our friends and family.”
