Sharks and Rays
Learn all about these fascinating predators
Special Education Tour – Sharks and Rays
Next to whalesharks and Manta Rays, the Similan Islands are home to many other species of sharks and rays. Among them are whitetip and blacktip reefsharks, leopardsharks, shovelnose rays, eagle rays, mobula rays, blue spotted rays and many more species. These fish belong to the subclass of Elasmobranches also described as cartilaginous fish and are some of the oldest creatures to be still around on earth. Sharks and rays always seem to fascinate divers and for a good reason. They are beautiful and often sit on the top of the food chain. This also gives them a vital role in the natural balance of coral reefs. You will learn about which species you can find in the Similans, their sensory systems, how they reproduce and their anatomy which is part of the SSI Shark DIver specialty. And of course we will go and dive the sites where we are most likely to find them. We will also show some movies on the shark finning industry and the impact this has on the health of our coral reefs.
Schedule of all our trips
-
Day 1: Pick up at hotel and leave for the Similan Islands for the check out dive and bouyancy dive. Presentation on sharks in the evening
-
Day 2: More dives in the Similans, looking for sharks and rays. 4 dives in total including a reef clean-up and a nightdive. Beach clean up in the afternoon and the movie shark water in the evening.
-
Day 3: The last day of the trip we make 3 more dives. Back in Khao Lak in the evening.
There is always a divesite briefing given before every dive. Plenty of meals are served each day in between the dives and we have a minimum surface interval of 2 hours in between the dives. The choice of divesites and jump-in times depend on the weather, surface and underwater conditions and the experience level of the divers on board.
Wicked Diving offers a unique opportunity to benefit the local community, improve the world around us and have a great diving vacation! We use 2% of all income to support local projects that support the local community, marine research or marine conservation (or all three!). When you dive with Wicked, you make a difference. Please read up on our various projects, and policies on the Ethical Diving page. Did you know the eggs on your trip will be from free-range, organically fed chickens?
