With more than 30 named dive sites ranging from gently sloping reefs to deep boulder sites with exciting current – the Similan Islands have a dive site for every desire and skill level.  And it is all easily accessible for day trips from our Khao Lak Center!

2 dives per day with long relaxed lunches spent on one of the famous white-sand beaches. We also give you the chance to visit viewpoints or walk through the jungle. Experience the Similans – don’t just visit. And not everyone needs to be a diver, you can snorkel the reefs as well and spend a lazy day on the beach, so bring all your friends!

Being just 70 Minutes off the coast we visit the Similan Islands every day on our fast and comfortable speedboat. With so many dive sites, you can go for several days and see something new every day. This gives you the opportunity to do some great diving and still sleep at your resort each night. We pick you up in the morning at your resort and drive to the pier where the speedboat is waiting to take you out to the islands. You will get a boatbriefing and a divesite briefing, so you will know exactly what you can expect under water. Conditions vary from site to site. Because we use a fast speedboat we are flexible in the choice of sites and beginners can dive in calm bays while at the same time the more experienced divers are brought to the more advanced sites. We do two dives, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. If the weather cooperates, we will have you back in your resort by 17:00 – time for a shower, nap and sunset drinks. What a life!

Similan Islands topography

The Similan Islands is a group of nine islands located about 30 nautical miles west from Khao Lak. They have Thai names but are often referred to by numbers, with island #1 in the south and #9 in the north. They are part of the Similan Island National Park, which means there are no villages, roads, shops and fishing is strictly forbidden. Island #1 – #3 are even completely off limits for tourists, as the beach of island #1 is a turtle nesting area. You will find the marine park headquarters on island #4 and #9, with toilets, tents and a small restaurant. On the east side of the islands you will see beautiful tropical beaches and gentle sloping reefs under water. The reefs are covered with bright soft corals and schools of fish in all colour and shape. On the west side the topography is completely different: big granite boulders form dramatic scenery with swimthroughs and lots of arches and strange shapes. More hard coral coverage here and conditions are often a bit more challenging due to currents that flow around the rock formations. It is the diversity of the underwater scenery that offers you some of the best diving in Thailand! No one is allowed to live here permanently, the corals are in great shape and some of the most amazing creatures in the world call this home! Located far enough offshore to avoid pollution, and close enough to the continental shelf to attract migrating marine life – there are few places in the world with this much diversity in one location. And the waters are gin clear with visibility ranging from 20-30 meters (60-100 ft).

Similan Islands marine life

It is almost impossible to describe all the different types of marine life that you can see in the Similan Islands. But expect huge schools of fish, beautiful coral bommies and anything from small nudibranch to sharks and rays. We often see turtles in the shallows and you are likely to see stingrays hiding in the sand as well as groups of garden eels. If you are lucky you might see a leopard shark or napoleon wrasse. In the deep western dive sites look for pelagics like sharks, barracuda, snappers and even manta rays. On the eastern coral reefs, look for giant moray eels, lionfish, octopus and hundreds of other species of reef fish. When conditions are calm, we even have groups of dolphins playing with the waves of the speedboat sometimes. So keep your eyes open!
