Khao Lak Wreck Trips – Boonsung Wreck
Daily Dive Trips to Khao Lak dive sites
The reason Bon Soong Wreck (also described as the Bangsak Wreck) is so exciting is the sheer magnitude of fish life. With very few other places to for the fish to go in the area, they all hide at the shipwreck. You will usually see 100,000 plus fish. Small fish of such amazing diversity – schools of puffers, all manner of moray eels in the nooks, lionfish by the dozen, sometimes a leopard shark lurking in the background, hundreds of shrimps and plenty more. This is a photographer’s paradise.
Situated only a few nautical miles from Cape Pakarang , the Boonsung Wreck is a perfect choice for a half a day trip or as an alternative to the sloping reefs and submerged pinnacles of the Similan islands. This old tin dredger sank around 20 years ago and is now a well established nursery for a huge variety of marine life. During the Tsunami, the dredger was split into three parts. This enlarged the dive site, making it easy to spend multiple dives slowly exploring its many nooks and crannies. The wreck lies at an average depth of between 18-20 meters, with the top of the wreck extending to around 15 meters.

We pick you up at your resort in the morning and take you out to the wreck by comfortable longtailboat. We are usually able to be the first one on the wreck and will spend two dives on the wreck. The number of people on the longtail is small and we have a maximum of 4 people per guide. On the first dive, we will explore the wreck, on the second it is time to look for all the rare and difficult stuff. In the surface interval we enjoy a great Thai lunch. Diving Depth runs 12-20 meters (40-65 feet). This divesite is ideal to dive on Nitrox which will allow you to make two nice long dives on the wreck, without worrying about your no decompression limits. Visibility tends to be murky as it is a bit closer to the coast and situated in an area lacking in reefs. Expect 5-10 meters (15-30 feet). But on some days it can be 15+ meter and you might be able to see the wreck from the surface. Currents can be present but are usually minimal. Experience level runs from beginner to the most jaded divers in the world. Anyone that dives this wreck loves it. Expect to be back in Khao Lak around 14:00 – 15:00 which leaves you enough time to enjoy a relaxed afternoon.

Bon Soong Marine Life
Tiny lion fish, white eyed morays, honeycomb morays, juvenile trigger fish and angel fish take shelter under the tin debris. Even the surface of the dredger itself appears to be alive, as it is covered in scorpion fish from the miniscule to the massive, as well as the most beautiful and rare nudibranches. Shrimps, gobies and octopus also appear around every corner. There are ghostpipefish which hover next to soft corals sprouting out of the wreck as well as along the sand floor. More elusive marine life, including stone fish, frog fish and sand dragonet fish can also be found. Look around the outside of the wreck for larger life, including leopard sharks, cuttlefish, sting rays, mantis shrimp and camouflaged flounders. Porcupine fish, trevallies as well as large schools of batfish, fusiliers and chevron barracuda often circle around and within the wreck.
If you are lucky, you may even find a whale shark, which are attracted to the divesite’s nutrient rich waters.
Wreck Diving Hazards
With some serious jagged pieces sticking out at odd angles and some pretty painful stinging beasties afoot, we recommend both caution and good buoyancy when doing this site. Avoid touching the wreck, as it has scorpionfish everywhere. It is stricly forbidden to penetrate the wreck.
