A couple of days ago I got an irresistible offer – to follow a Danish family to Surin Islands as their snorkel guide for a day!
Early morning we headed up to the pier in Kuraburi. All of us pretty tired but once on the speedboat and after a glass of yummy neon pink Fanta we all woke up and were ready to go snorkeling -Henrik, Bodil and their super sweet kids Julius and Freja. We dropped off our bags at the park head quarters and next thing we were the water and off to look for “Nemo” and his friends.
We didn’t have to wait for long before spotting blacktip reef shark, a couple of fat moray eels and a turtle… AND at least three types of nemos… Freja and Julius swam like little fishes in the water. We stopped at 5 different spots all around the islands during the day, accompanied by one or two thai guides pointing out special points of interest… thanks Mhee and Dee! We were even offered a bonus snorkel site – hard to say no to…!
Thrilled about this and all we had seen, I lost track of time – and once back on the island I was told the boat for mainland had left one hour ago… My Danish friends were in no rush -they had booked to stay two days. I got my own tent at the beach plus strict orders to be in time for helping out with dinner preparations… They had already figured out I’m addicted to Som Tam (spicy papaya salad), so I was put in training to make some for our guests, and to learn all the ingredients in thai…
After dinner and an after-work at the staffs’ tents with some guitar playing and singing songs (I was lost pretty quickly in the lyrics though), I fell fast asleep listening to the sounds from the bay and the djungle. Next morning after breakfast our little group went out for the morning snorkel – and what a morning! More reef sharks, an eagle ray, sea snake… and all of that amazing coral.
Afraid of being kicked out of the DMT program, I made extra sure to be on the speedboat after lunch (and some more salad), teary eyed but looking forward to a hot shower at home in Wicked Village…
