All of us here at Wicked Diving are excited and happy to announce that we switched to 100% Reef Safe sunscreen and strongly encourage all our guests to do so. This will further reduce the impact on the dive sites, the marine life and protects the reefs of the communities we dive in. Wicked Diving will be the first adventure and scuba diving company in Indonesia to make this decision.
As divers and as Wicked Diving we are known to be aware of what is happening in the world. Every drop of water will always at some point end up in the ocean, so we are the first ones to know and see how healthy our oceans are.
Everybody has seen some form of evidence of the impact of humans on our environment. No we are not preachers, definitely not. But we are continuously looking at ways to minimize our footprint. We do a lot already, but there is always room for improvement!

Sunscreen and Soap
This might seem just a small problem, but did you know that on average 5000 tons of sunscreen enters our world waters every year. Most common sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, these can be toxic in miniscule concentrations of about 62 parts per trillion. This is the equivalent of 1 drop of water inside six olympic sized swimming pools, which can damage up to 50% of the coral larvae in this concentration.
Do we let our guest burn?
As our guest we urge you to bring your own reef safe sunscreen and soaps into the Komodo Komodo National Park. Wicked will provide reef safe sunscreen and soaps (depending on stock and availability). The company we work with uses only natural ingredients, and NO palm oil. To be on the safe side, we recommend you purchase your own reef safe sunscreen. We can’t recommend Stream2Sea more. This sunscreen was created by an avid scuba diver and is one of the top choices available on the market. Buy yours now here and get 10% off with the code “wickeddiving” at checkout.
Our dream, is to start producing our own soaps and sunscreens. Just imagine if we could help the ocean we dearly love, and create an opportunity for the local community at the same time. I imagine a group of women (we like women empowerment at Wicked Diving) owning their own enterprise that produces reef safe sunscreen, soaps, conditioners and maybe even toothbrushes. Two birds, one stone… Wicked Good to the max. And this way we can eliminate the transport emissions we would get from import.
The Wicked Diving Philosophy
Stepping over to using reef safe soaps and sunscreens fits our company philosophy. Wicked Diving is ethical diving, from a human point of view, but also from an environment point of view.
Wicked Diving in 2018
In the last year we have made many steps:
- We have managed to reduce our plastic usage, by communicating with our suppliers, and providing reusable solutions.
- Wicked Diving has been one of the instigators to set up and organize a recycling station in Labuan Bajo Flores.
- Our daily products on the Liveaboard, is all local produce
- We have had the honor to be awarded by WWF with three Starfish, in their rating for sustainable Tourism.
- And now, today, December 14th 2018 we pledge to be the first Liveaboard company in Asia to go 100% Reef Safe.
We cannot wait to see what 2019 has to offer you, our guests and friends! Let’s keep working on a sustainable future…
